The Formula For Cramps: A Topical Option for Period Discomfort
← All articles
Not everything has to be swallowed. For localized discomfort, applying something directly to the area has a long history in Chinese medicine — liniments, plasters, and oil-based preparations are a whole category of the medicine, not an afterthought.
The Formula For Cramps is a topical blend we carry for exactly that use.
What's in it
This is a topical formula combining traditional Chinese herbs with castor oil, magnesium, and menthol. Each of those components has a reason to be there in the traditional framework:
- Castor oil has a long history of use as an abdominal application, most familiarly as a castor oil pack.
- Magnesium applied topically is a popular approach for muscular comfort. (Worth an honest note: the evidence for how much magnesium is actually absorbed through skin is limited, and we'd rather say that than imply otherwise.)
- Menthol produces the cooling sensation you'll notice immediately — a counter-irritant effect that's well understood and immediately perceptible.
- The herbal component follows the traditional approach of supporting circulation and warmth in the lower abdomen.
How people use it
Applied to the lower abdomen and low back, generally massaged in, often paired with heat. Many patients find the combination of a topical application and a heating pad more useful than either alone — and heat has been the first-line traditional recommendation for this kind of discomfort for centuries.
Some patients use it alongside an internal formula like Cramp Champ. Others prefer topical only, particularly if they're sensitive to taking things internally or already on medications they don't want to complicate.
The low back connection
Here's the part that's specific to a clinic like ours. A meaningful number of women who come in for cycle pain also have a lumbopelvic structural component — low back and pelvic mechanics that make everything worse during the days when tissues are already sensitized.
We notice this because we're a Gonstead practice sharing a building with an acupuncturist. It's not something a supplement shop would flag. If your cycle pain reliably includes low back pain, it's worth having your low back and pelvis actually examined rather than assuming it's all hormonal.
Honest limits
A topical is a comfort measure. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment for an underlying condition. Menstrual pain that is severe, worsening over time, newly different, or interfering with your life warrants a real evaluation — see our women's hormone health guide for what that involves.
Don't apply to broken skin. Patch test first if you have sensitive skin. Menthol-containing products shouldn't be used with a heating pad set high — the combination can cause skin irritation or burns, so use warmth, not heat.
