Peekay's Cold & Flu: A Seasonal Herbal Formula for Maine Winters
By Dr. Shanna Hudgin
← All articles
Every Mainer knows the feeling. It's the second week of February, someone at work has been coughing for three days, and you wake up with a throat that feels slightly wrong. You've got about a twelve-hour window where you might do something about it.
That window is precisely what traditional Chinese herbal medicine has always aimed at, and it's why we keep Peekay's Cold & Flu in stock through the winter.
What it is
A concentrated herbal formula from Lhasa, traditionally used for seasonal immune and upper respiratory support. It's a tincture, which means it's fast to take, easy to dose, and doesn't require you to boil anything at 6 a.m.
The traditional logic of "catch it early"
Chinese medicine has a genuinely useful framework here that Western over-the-counter medicine mostly lacks. Classical formulas for this category are organized by stage — what you take at the very first hint of something is different from what's appropriate once it's settled in your chest, which is different again from what's used during a lingering post-illness cough.
The formulas aimed at that earliest stage are meant to be taken immediately — at the scratchy throat, the chill, the "something's off" feeling. That's the traditional instruction, and it's the single most practical thing to take away from this article. Waiting three days to see whether it becomes anything real is the opposite of how these were designed to be used.
Keeping a seasonal kit
We suggest patients build a small kit before winter rather than scrambling during it. A reasonable one:
- A stage-appropriate formula like this one, kept where you'll actually find it
- Cold Prevention Tea for gentler daily use, including for kids
- Herbal Cough Drops & Throat Soothers for the throat and cough phase
- Peekay's Throat Spray for targeted throat comfort
- Vitamin D, which matters more here than in most of the country — see why vitamin D matters, especially in Maine
Honest limits, clearly stated
This is a comfort and support product, not a treatment for influenza or any other infection.
Get actual medical care if you have: a high or persistent fever, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, symptoms that improve and then sharply worsen, or symptoms lasting beyond about ten days. That applies double for infants, older adults, pregnant patients, and anyone immunocompromised.
Herbal formulas also aren't universally appropriate — some aren't recommended during pregnancy, and some interact with medications. Ask before you add.
Where acupuncture fits in the season
Something patients don't expect: acupuncture is used for acute colds and flus in Chinese medicine, not just chronic conditions. It's part of the acute category on our acupuncture page, and it's a reasonable same-week appointment when something's coming on.
The unglamorous foundations still do most of the work, though — sleep, adequate protein, managing stress load, hand washing, and vitamin D status through a Maine winter.
