Herbal Exfoliant & Cleanser: A Powder Cleanser With Mung Bean and Green Tea
← All articles
Powder cleansers confuse people the first time. You tip some into your palm, add water, and it becomes a paste. It feels like a step backward from a pump bottle.
It isn't, and the reasons are genuinely good.
What it is
An herbal powder cleanser and mask from Golden Sunshine, built on mung bean and green tea, used for gentle exfoliation and nourishing skincare.
Mung bean powder — lü dou — has a long history in Chinese skincare preparations. It shows up in traditional face washes and masks going back centuries. Green tea is one of the most researched botanicals in skincare, with genuine interest around its polyphenol content and topical antioxidant activity.
Why the powder format is smart
No preservatives needed. A water-free product doesn't support microbial growth, so it doesn't need a preservative system. For reactive skin, that's one fewer ingredient category to react to.
You control the strength. Wetter paste is gentler; thicker paste is more exfoliating. Same jar, two intensities, depending on what your skin can take that day.
Two products in one. Rinse immediately and it's a cleanser. Leave it on for several minutes and it's a mask.
Gentle physical exfoliation. Finely milled plant powder is a much softer abrasive than the harsh scrubs of the 2000s — and it isn't plastic, which matters both for your skin and for the water it goes down into.
It doesn't spoil quickly and it travels without leaking.
How to use it
Tip a small amount into your palm, add water a little at a time until you have a paste, apply in gentle circles, and rinse. For mask use, apply a thicker layer, leave it several minutes, and rinse before it fully dries and tightens.
Two to three times a week is plenty for most people. Over-exfoliation is one of the most common self-inflicted skin problems there is — it produces the exact redness, sensitivity, and irritation people are usually trying to fix, which leads them to exfoliate more, which makes it worse.
Follow with a moisturizer while skin is still damp. The Herbal Facial Moisturizer from the same line is the natural pairing.
Who should be cautious
Skip physical exfoliation entirely if you have: active inflammatory acne (rubbing inflamed lesions makes them worse and can spread bacteria), rosacea or easily flushed skin, active eczema or dermatitis on the face, recent cosmetic procedures or peels, or if you're using prescription retinoids or acids — those already accelerate turnover, and stacking exfoliation on top is how people wreck their barrier.
Patch test on the jawline first.
The bigger picture
Skin reflects internal conditions. Persistent adult acne, chronic redness, and stubborn texture issues frequently connect to hormones and androgens, insulin resistance and blood sugar handling, gut function, nutrient status, sleep, and stress.
Chinese medicine also addresses facial skin directly through needling — see our post on cosmetic acupuncture and skin health.
