Chronic Low Back Pain: What a Full Gonstead Work-Up Looks For
← All articles
Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek out chiropractic care, and it's also one of the easiest complaints to treat too narrowly — focusing only on the lumbar spine because that's where the pain is felt.
A full Gonstead work-up doesn't start from that assumption. Because the spine functions as one connected structure, a full-spine visualization and X-ray analysis checks the pelvis, thoracic spine, and cervical spine as well — not just the lumbar segments. An unlevel pelvis, for instance, can place ongoing stress on the low back that a purely local approach won't resolve, because the actual driver of the problem sits above or below where the pain is felt.
Static and motion palpation, along with Nervoscope instrumentation, help confirm which specific segment or segments are actually restricted or irritated — which isn't always the same segment where the pain is reported. Referred pain is common with the low back; an L5 finding can feel like it's coming from the hip, or a sacroiliac issue can mimic disc pain.
This is especially relevant if you've tried chiropractic or other manual therapy for low back pain before without lasting relief. A regional approach that didn't check the whole spine may have missed a contributing factor outside the area that was treated. A full-spine exam is built specifically to catch that.

Frequently asked questions
Why would you check my neck if my low back is what hurts?
Because the spine functions as one connected structure — findings elsewhere, like an unlevel pelvis or a mid-back restriction, can contribute to ongoing low back stress.
Is chronic low back pain always a disc problem?
No. It can involve disc changes, but also joint restriction, pelvic unleveling, muscular compensation, or nerve irritation — which is why a full exam matters before assuming the cause.
What if I've already tried chiropractic care for my low back without relief?
A full-spine exam, including X-ray analysis, may identify a contributing factor that a more regionally focused approach didn't check.
